The Role

We are looking for a Controller to lead all day-to-day accounting, finance and operational functions. This is a highly collaborative role, interacting with all departments in the business, and stretches beyond the traditional accounting and finance controller remit. In addition to providing solid accounting and finance oversight, the controller will manage tax, legal, insurance and HR activities assisted by external advisors when necessary. Based in Grow’s San Francisco office, the role will report to the Senior Director of Finance and Operations and will manage and develop an Accounting Manager.



Responsibilities & Structure:

Accounting & Finance

  • Enforce a strong internal controls environment, harnessing system access restrictions across accounting, banking, payroll and other IT platforms, and physical segregation duties

  • Ensure timely and accurate production of monthly financial statements

  • Prepare annual budgets and drive monthly forecasting process, including harnessing CRM insights

  • Ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements

  • Supervise the work of the accounting manager including review of all balance sheet reconciliations, profit and loss account variances and payroll

  • Set and enforce internal finance and accounting policies

  • Manage Grow treasury function

  • Work with CPA firm to ensure tax compliance and manage and mitigate Grow's tax liability

  • Support the Senior Director of Finance and Operations developing systems and reporting to drive profitability

  • Drive increased financial reporting visibility and processing efficiency through use of existing and new software platforms

Legal & Insurance

  • Advise on insurance, finance and other aspects of client and vendor contracts, obtaining external advice when needed

  • Ensure a robust contracts management system is in place

  • Ensure appropriate levels and types of corporate insurance are maintained and own relationship with insurance brokers


  • Manage/supervise HR-related activities including maintaining and administering benefits plans, preparing employee and contractor agreements and payments and managing various compliance activities

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting

  • CPA certification

  • 2-4 years of experience with a “Big 4” or other professional accounting firm; plus 1-2 years of industry experience, ideally in a marketing or advertising agency environment

  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (i.e., budgeting, financial closure, reporting etc.) and GAAP

  • Good understanding of both financial and operational controls

  • Proven experience or deep familiarity with deferred revenue calculations

  • Prior experience with vendor contract management, insurance, HR and employee benefit plans

  • Personable with excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to partner effectively with cross-functional teams and develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Critical thinker with attention to detail who can seek innovative solutions to complex business, technical and database issues
